Tens of Thousands Still in Need
Despite the expansion of Islamic Relief’s projects in 2007, ongoing conflict leaves many people still in need. Tens of thousands of people do not have permanent shelter and live as refugees in temporary settlements or IDP camps with very little access to proper water and sanitation.
According to the United Nations currently half of the conflict-affected population of Darfur is children.
To address ongoing health concerns and ensure access to safe water, Islamic Relief has implemented two projects that will last through 2008 and provide care for 78,000 people in El Geneina, West Darfur as well as other areas of Sudan.
Providing Health Services to Conflict-Affected Populations: Beneficiaries: 52,000
• Provide essential drugs and medicines • Provide medical equipment (screening kits, microscopes, lab tools) • HIV/AIDS awareness in IDP camps • Provide ambulance services to patients
Improve Water and Sanitation: Beneficiaries: 26,000
• Drill and install bore holes and hand pumps • Rehabilitate existing hand pumps in IDP camps • Provide hand pump maintenance training • Provide and distribute tool kits for hand pump maintenance
