Mauritius is an island-nation located in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar. The Portuguese landed in Mauritius in the beginning of the 16th century. Subsequently it was controlled by foreign European powers such as the Dutch, French, and the British. Mauritius obtained its independence from the British in 1968.

A country of over one million people, Mauritius is a small nation that has relied on foreign investment and tourism to be in a better situation than most other countries on the African continent. Mauritius has one of the better per capita incomes in Africa and a population with a greater life expectancy than most others.
