Afghanistan Project School Kandahar

Project Overview
Many Afghans go through life with little or no education. Where education is available, it is generally of poor quality and compromised by lack of experienced teachers.

In this project, Islamic Relief aims to revitalize, rehabilitate, and improve the primary education infrastructure and system in Kandahar through reconstructing schools, training teachers, preparing manuals and establishing a resource center.

Project Background
Decades of warfare and civil unrest has resulted in the destruction of schools and the quality of teaching associated with the Kandahar Education Directorate.

Islamic Relief proposed a holistic approach to strengthen capacity of the Kandahar Education Directorate in primary education along with essential steps to rehabilitate and respond to the immediate needs of the primary schools.

Project Objectives
Islamic Relief hopes to improve the quality of education in southern Afghanistan through a process of providing organized teacher’s training manuals to currently serving, under-skilled teachers who have no prior history of teacher training or qualifications

Project Activities
• Development of new teacher training manuals and resource materials, which focus on modern teaching techniques
• Distribution of 1,500 copies of teacher training manuals
• Training for up to 1,300 under-skilled teachers
• Training for up to 90 master trainers
• 74,080 current children will receive better quality of education through more adequately trained teachers (with prospects of an additional 25,000 to 35,000 newly enrolled students to benefit each year)

Beneficiaries
This projects aims to benefit approximately 1,300 teachers who currently lack basic qualifications; 74,080 currently enrolled students; and 25,000 to 35,000 perspective students to enroll each year.
