Afghanistan Project Rehab Primary Education

Project Overview
Twenty years of war and internal conflicts have resulted in the complete destruction of social and economic infrastructure including the virtual collapse of the education system in terms of physical and human resources.

This project is aimed at rehabilitating and rebuilding the education sector for long-term human development of the region through a focus on primary education.

Project Background
During recent civil unrest and major change in power, the Education Directorate in Afghanistan was forced to close the schools and the directorate's institutional capacity deteriorated rapidly.

Due to return of peace and stability in the province, the provincial government has opened 40 schools in Kandhar city and its surrounding areas. Out of the total schools, 35 are primary.

Project Activities
The primary education infrastructure of Kandhar city and suburb areas has been rehabilitated and is functional.

Project Goal
• Memorandum of Understanding with Kandhar Education Directorate/provincial authorities for establishing partnership.
• Selection of primary schools and identification of infrastructure improvement needs.
• Tendering process.
• Certification of completion of repair work.
• Investigating capacity building strategy.
• Recalling or hiring of primary school teachers and other professional and support staff.
• Establishing examination and certification procedures in primary schools.
• Identification of required improvements in curricula and teaching resource material.

Beneficiaries
The main beneficiaries of the project are students, parents, teachers and Education Directorate of Kandhar province. In total 40 schools will benefit from the project.
