Project Overview
Twenty years of war in Afghanistan has resulted in the collapse of the health services. Large scale displacement of people as a result of military conflict has left many communities far from any health facilities.

The Paghman clinic will provide a much needed service of basic medical care serving approximately 30,000 - 40,000 individuals and will also assist in reducing their traveling time to distant medical services.

Project Background
Afghanistan has one of the lowest sets of social indicators in the world. The twenty years of war and internal conflicts have resulted in the complete destruction of social and economic infrastructure.

The destruction also includes virtual collapse of the health sector in terms of physical and human resources. This sector remained largely neglected over the years and has struggled to cope with the onset of the recent military intervention.

Besides injuries inflicted as a result of the military conflict, there has been a large-scale displacement of communities moving into areas exposed to ordinances and also resulting in them moving far from existing health facilities.

The situation has been aggravated by the lack of support and facilities available to ensure a basic level of health facilities to a vast majority of the population.

The community of Paghman is situated about 45 minutes west of Kabul City.

It is a predominantly agricultural region, where wheat, walnuts and mulberries are grown, however the majority of the workforce is not employed in agriculture, but instead work in the building trade or on laboring jobs in Kabul.

It is a highly conservative rural population with average family size of eight persons.

The health conditions of the community are very poor and approximately 80 percent of children get pneumonia each winter.

Project Objectives
The program aims to build a clinic as part of improving health infrastructure and to pave the ground to facilitate primary health care delivery for the local population.

Project Activities
• Registration and approval from the Ministry of Public Health.
• Construction of clinic.
• Supply of medical equipment and material.

Beneficiaries
The number of beneficiaries which would benefit from this program total 40,000, from the community of Paghman, and outlying areas, with 26,400 of these coming from vulnerable groups.
