Afghanistan Project Nahrin Water
Project Overview Two major earthquakes shook the Nahrin District of Afghanistan in March and April of 2002, causing significant loss of life and enormous damage to infrastructure and water resources. The Nahrin district is prone to droughts and rains have failed for the past three years, so the restoration of the town's water supply is a priority.
Project Background On March 25, 2002, a major earthquake shook the Nahrin District of Baghlan Province, causing significant loss of life and enormous damage to infrastructure and water resources. The region also experienced three years of ruinous drought. This earthquake measured 5.9 on the Richter scale with the epicenter almost directly on Nahrin City, at the relatively shallow depth of 8 miles.
The most severe destruction was concentrated within the 9 mile radius of in Markaz Nahrin. The devastation in the center of the town itself was massive, with most buildings reduced to nothing more than a pile of rubble and absolute no access to any water resources.
A second earthquake hit Nahrin on April 12, 2002. More damage was brought to an already devastated area of Nahrin City, while at the same time heavily damaging several additional villages, which had previously not been affected such as Jelga and Doabi.
Given the magnitude of the destruction it was clear that projects such as shelter, water supply, immediate medical relief and road repair was necessary prior to the winter of 2003.
Project Objectives Islamic Relief hopes to contribute to the sustainable return and reconstruction of livelihoods to those affected by the devastating earthquakes of 2002 by providing sources of safe drinking water.
Project Activities • 18 wells dug with complete fabrication and installation of concrete rings/slabs for lining the wells, concrete lids and pedestals installed to protect from external pollutants • 18 hand pumps installed in these wells to provide access to safe drinking water
Beneficiaries This project is intended to benefit 14,400 local families. They will access easily to healthy and clean water for drinking and daily utilization.
