Supporting Carnations Farmers
Ongoing conflict in Gaza and the West Bank frequently results in local travel restrictions. Increasing border closures have left many residents unable to find work and many farmers unable to export their goods. Without exports, local businesses suffer and farmers, among other workers, are forced out of business and into poverty.
Currently, around 75,000 Gazans have lost their jobs due to border closures. In the agriculture sector alone, over 8,000 farmers have lost their jobs due to the inability to export goods and travel restrictions.
Supporting Palestinian Farmers
Through Islamic Relief’s new project, carnation farmers suffering from limited mobility and stifled exports are making a living once again.
Instead of allowing harvests to go to waste, Islamic Relief’s new project aims to help stimulate farmers’ businesses by buying the fresh harvests and distributing them to families throughout Gaza and the West Bank.
Although the project is still in its first stage, Islamic Relief has already bought more than 23,000 carnation bouquets from local farmers and distributed them to hospital patients, orphans, the poor and handicapped children.
These distributions not only provided much-needed support for local Palestinian businesses in Gaza and the West Bank, but also brought much-needed happiness and relief to those who received the beautiful bouquets.
Islamic Relief plans to continue this project into the future and expand on it further by purchasing and distributing additional harvests such as vegetables and other foods. |
