This past year, Islamic Relief offered its donors a new twist to our Udhiyah/Qurbani program.  Recognizing that poverty exists right here in the United States, Islamic Relief donors had the option of distributing their donated meat and aid supplies to domestic families in need.

Udhiyah/Qurbani is an Islamic religious practice performed at the time of Eid al-Adha (the 10th day of the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah) involving the slaughtering of an animal; usually a sheep, goat, or cow.  The event commemorates the devotion and commitment of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) to God Almighty.

With the help of our generous donors and volunteers, Islamic Relief was able to distribute a remarkable 30,000 pounds of food during this nationwide effort.  With local distributions in California (Sacramento, Anaheim, and Los Angeles) and Michigan (Detroit), thousands of people in need were able to benefit from this domestic distribution.

"I came because I have kids and I could really use the help," said Udhiyah beneficiary Shamso, West African immigrant and mother of 2. "A lot of people can use the help; most of them are refugees."

"Putting a smile on someone's face is priceless!" said Munir Iqtish, Islamic Relief coordinator for the California distributions. "We always see the hardship of the poor and the needy through out the world, and we have no problem giving and helping the poor from poor countries. However, we tend to forget that there is a lot of needy people live amongst us and need our help."

Islamic Relief would like to thank all the donors, volunteers, and partnering organizations who helped make this year's domestic Udhiyah/Qurbani distribution such a success.  We look forward to expanding this project to serve many more people in need next year.
