Seyama

Seyama's Story

"My name is Seyama. I live with my husband and nine children in a camp for displaced people in Darfur, Sudan.

We were forced to leave our village when the fighting began. Before we left, we had everything we needed – a home, water, farms, livestock, and more. We were happy. We never expected this would happen to us.

I work as a laborer a few days a week; two to three days a week I have four children attending school at the camp; two other children work to help us financially, including my 15-year old son Abdel Aziz, who had to quit school.

There is no electricity at the camp, but at least we have water, thanks to Islamic Relief, which drilled hand pumps inside the camp. They are also providing us training on how we can build fuel-efficient stoves to reduce the need for going out into the field to collect wood.

We lost everything, our home, our land; we don't feel safe here. We pray for peace every day and God willing, one day we can go back."
