China Earthquake Emergency

Current Situation (last updated June 25, 2008):
More than 10 million people across China have been affected by the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit the country on May 12, 2008. Over 200,000 people have been injured, another 70,000 confirmed dead, and at least another 18,600 are still missing in what is being called the strongest earthquake to hit the country in over 30 years.
The mid-day quake collapsed schools, buildings, water towers, houses and communications systems, leaving thousands of people, including many school children, buried under large piles of rubble. Over 3,000 aftershocks have followed the quake since it hit, 23 of them rising to magnitude 5 on the Richter scale. 14 million people are said to have been affected by the quake and 5 million people are expected to be left homeless.

Shelter for Those Left Homeless
In Sichuan, more than 200,000 houses have entirely collapsed and another 4 million damaged. Fear of becoming trapped during an aftershock has forced tens of thousands of people to sleep outside on the ground. Tents and makeshift shelters cover every stretch of available land.
Concerned by the numbers of those in need, the Chinese government has increased its efforts to get aid to survivors. The entire country has been mobilized to support earthquake victims by donating funds, blood and relief supplies.
The government of China has vowed to prevent outbreaks of disease during the relief and recovery phases by ensuring the safety of drinking water and food, checking public health conditions and disinfecting recovered bodies (CNN). School children have begun resuming classes established in makeshift schools under donated tents. Resuming everyday routines is being encouraged as a way to help survivors get their lives back to normal and begin the healing process.
Islamic Relief’s Response:
Islamic Relief is on the ground providing immediate relief to those worst affected by this disaster with food, water, shelter, and medical care in the Sichuan province.
To distribute aid, Islamic Relief is working in conjunction with the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA) and the Gansu Association for NGO International Economic and Technical Co-operation (GANGO), two of the largest operational NGOs in the country.
Islamic Relief has already provided emergency aid in the Gansu Province where over 200,000 people have been displaced and close to another 5,000 were injured during the quake.
Aid Provided So Far:
Gansu Province—4,000 beneficiaries • 48,000 bags of instant noodles • 30,000 bottles of mineral water • 300 cartons of biscuits • 10,080 kg of cooked meat

Islamic Relief’s Future Plans:
Islamic Relief plans to support the construction of 10 transitional schools that will benefit over 3,000 earthquake-affected children. Each school will accommodate 300 children and be complete with classrooms, principal’s offices, tables, chairs, blackboards and more.
Islamic Relief in China
Islamic Relief has been working in China providing short-term relief and long-term development. In Shaanxi, Islamic Relief was able to respond quickly to the floods of 2002, providing immediate emergency relief, and later rebuilding houses for hundreds of people left homeless by the deluge. Islamic Relief's Ramadan and Qurbani food distributions have contributed towards alleviating severe food shortages. Each Ramadan, Islamic Relief’s food distributions benefit over 6,500 people, while the Qurbani distributions reach a further 4,000. Operating through local partners, Islamic Relief's future work in China will concentrate on the western provinces of Gansu, Xinjiang and Ningxia.
