Children In Need

War, poverty and disaster often leave children the most vulnerable members of their communities. Nearly 115 million children are not receiving an education. 20 million children have been forced from their homes due to armed conflict and over 15 million children have been orphaned by AIDS.
For over 15 years, Islamic Relief has been working to better the lives of children around the world through a variety of projects, including healthcare, education, food and nutrition, water and sanitation, orphan sponsorships, shelter, and psycho-social support.
Education Projects
• Nearly 115 million children of primary school age are not receiving an education. • Most of these children come from impoverished families where the mother herself has no formal education. • Over 870 million adults are illiterate, most of them are women.
Education provides the key to a better future, helping people fulfill their potential and pursue their goals in life. For millions of people across the developing world, even basic education is far out of reach due to poverty. Poverty is closely linked to illiteracy - as both cause and consequence. Without basic literacy or skills, the opportunities for people to break free from the cycle of poverty are limited.
Islamic Relief has initiated a number of community-based education projects to provide impoverished communities with access to education and vocational training - providing a way out of the poverty trap.

Water and Sanitation Projects
• More than 2.6 billion people – 40% of the world’s population – lack basic sanitation facilities. • As a result, thousands of children die every day from diarrhea and other water-, sanitation- and hygiene-related diseases (UNICEF).
Water is a basic necessity for life. Life and death for humanity are inextricably linked to the availability of and access to clean, natural water resources. Millions however are left without such access. Some of Islamic Relief’s most important development projects helping children to have a better quality of life include improving community access to clean water resources.
Islamic Relief currently operates water and sanitation projects in several countries around the world, including: Indonesia, Sudan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Albania, Bangladesh, Chechnya, Kosova, and the Palestinian territories.

Orphan Projects
Many people around the world are deprived of basic necessities such as shelter, water, food and medical care. In times of disaster, either natural or man-made, pre-existing conditions of poverty are intensified. In these times children are often the most vulnerable and suffer greatly, especially those that are orphans.
• Islamic Relief donors are currently sponsoring more than 27,000 orphans worldwide • Orphans sponsored in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East • Sponsored orphans receive educational support, social support, regular health checkups, shelter and clothing
Sami’s Story
Nine-year-old Sami is just one of over 400 million people in Asia suffering from some form of disability. Statistically, Sami’s disability means he is far less likely to succeed in education and continue facing problems in accessing the medical care he needs.

Healthcare Projects
• Severe poverty means children only have a one in four chance of surviving beyond their 5th birthday. • Every day, 300,000 children under the age of 5 die – that is 11 million children a year. • Most of these deaths are caused by diseases that could have been easily prevented with inexpensive drugs.
Providing access to health care and medications is fundamental in the fight against poverty. Healthy children can attend school regularly, giving them a better opportunity to improve their future.
Islamic Relief operates a number of healthcare projects that benefit children worldwide. These projects include, but are not limited to: • Mother and child healthcare programs • Construction and rehabilitation of medical clinics • Distribution of vaccines and medicines • Health checkups and immunizations • Early intervention centers
Overcoming Addiction
Eight-year-old Oguhulbebe and her five-year-old brother Hamid live on a rural farm with their family in the Bagh province of Afghanistan. Suffering from unemployment, Oguhulbede’s father is unable to afford medicines for the family. When the children were ill, their mother would blow heroin smoke into their mouths to calm their cries, turning both Oguhulbebe and Hamid into drug addicts.
Thanks to Islamic Relief’s Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Center in Afghanistan, Oguhulbede and her entire family receive therapy and health care to help them overcome their addiction.

Children of Conflict
• An estimated 20 million children have been forced to flee their homes due to ongoing conflict (UNICEF) • These children are now internally displaced or living as refugees in other areas • More than 2 million children have died as a direct result of armed conflicts over the last decade
Armed conflicts are a global scourge with devastating affects on children. Islamic Relief believes that in times of conflict, countries are rebuilt and populations are given hope through caring for and empowering children.
This is why Islamic Relief operates many relief and development projects in war-torn countries to help and better provide for children. These projects include education and water projects, healthcare facilities, orphan sponsorships, or early intervention centers.
Mabior’s Release
As a former child soldier, 13-year-old Mabior experienced regular brutality and extreme poverty. Islamic Relief, working with a consortium of organizations, negotiated for Mabior’s release from the armed group. Since then Mabior has been reunited with his family, given new clothes and enrolled in school.
