Fighting Hunger in Africa

Increasing food insecurity and severe shortages in rain fall have put Kenya and Ethiopia in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
Improving Nutrition in Ethiopia:
Cyclical natural disasters such as droughts, floods and insect infestations regularly pose threats to the livelihoods of the rural population in Ethiopia. Currently, around 85% of the population of Ethiopia lives in rural areas.
Poor rainfall, increasing food prices and plummeting animal sales over the last year have left around 4.5 million people across four regions in need of humanitarian assistance.
To cope with this situation, many households have begun reducing the number of meals from three to two and the amount of food given at any one meal. The reduction in quantity and quality of food consumed will create malnourishment among the elderly and children of the community.
With assistance from world partners such as ECHO and UNICEF, Islamic Relief is currently operating a Nutrition Improvement Project to benefit more than 2,700 Ethiopians with nutritional supplements as well as medical care for malnourished women and children. Combating Food Insecurity in Kenya:
Although food reserves have managed to allow Kenya to avoid 60% of the global food price increases, the current stocks of food will not last. Reduced food production, increased costs in transporting food and speculation by traders controlling food commodities are expected to quickly push Kenya further into a food crisis.
Kenya’s decreased food production is attributed to many factors among which include: recent conflict, movement of IDPs from food-producing areas to camps where they depend on outside assistance, as well as below average and erratic rainfall.
It is estimated that close to 70% of the total population of Kenya will soon be affected by food insecurity, causing major social consequences and political unrest.
Islamic Relief is in Kenya coordinating food distributions for 2,000 households in IDP camps. Food items provided include wheat flour, sugar, rice, palm dates, and cooking oil. Click here to read more about Islamic Relief’s work in Kenya.
