Palestine Humanitarian Crisis
(last updated September 2, 2008)

Facts on Palestine:
  •  80% of Palestinian workers are unemployed.
  •  79% of Gaza lives in poverty. $175 a month can provide for a family of seven or more.
  • 1.3 million people are estimated to be food insecure.
  • 90% of Palestinian children do not feel safe.
  • 120,000 Palestinian workers are banned from leaving the are to find work.

Current Situation in Palestine:
At the beginning of 2008, Palestine was victim to one of the worst humanitarian crises the country had seen in decades. Restricted fuel shipments, increased travel restrictions and intensified conflict left 1.4 million people in Gaza in dire need of humanitarian assistance.

On January 22, 2008, Islamic relief launched an urgent, close to $10 million appeal to aid those worst-affected by the crisis in Gaza. The initial emergency aid provided included food packages, blankets, cooking sets, hygiene packages, emergency gas lights, and urgent medical necessities.  This aid has provided for more than 500,000 people in Palestine.

Throughout the year Islamic Relief, in coordination with world partners, has continued to provide vital emergency aid to the neediest families in Gaza. In addition, Islamic Relief has implemented many development projects throughout Gaza and the West Bank to further ease the burden of poverty on poor families in Palestine.

Renovating Al-Shefa Maternity Hospital

Al-Shefa Maternity Hospital is the main hospital in the Gaza Strip. On average, the facility receives about 50-60 delivery cases per day, despite there only being six delivery beds in 2007.  To read more about Islamic Relief's work at Al-Shefa Hospital, click here.

Supporting Carnations Farmers

Ongoing border closures have left many farmers unable to export their goods. Through Islamic Relief's new project, carnation farmers suffering because of limited mobility are making a living once again. Click here to read more.

Celebrating Palestinian Children

Children raised in environments of conflict and violence often fall into hopelessness and despair. To give Palestinian children a creative outlet and help them overcome their harsh environment, Islamic Relief sponsored a five-day festival celebrating Palestinian children and their talents. Islamic Relief in Palestine:

Islamic Relief has worked in Palestine since 1994, and opened its Gaza City office in 1998. Since then, Islamic Relief has been working to help the Palestinians with food aid, medical relief, small business loans, and orphan sponsorships. Islamic Relief has also established educational enhancement centers, care programs for psychologically traumatized children and a school for the deaf.
